Dilute tortoiseshell is a coat pattern rather than a breed. Where a standard tortie mixes black and orange, a dilute shows blue-gray and cream in patches or a fine marbled blend, thanks to a recessive dilution gene a cat must inherit from both parents. The patchwork depends on two X chromosomes, so nearly all dilute torties are female.
Most dilute torties adopters meet are domestic shorthairs or longhairs, medium-sized at roughly 6 to 14 pounds, and many live 12 to 18 years. Coat color says little about personality, despite the tortitude folklore, so spend time with a cat in person before deciding. In Atlanta, most will be happiest indoors, away from traffic, summer heat and the coyotes reported around intown parks.
