The Chausie is a tall, lean cat with large ears set high on the head, a short coat and a build closer to a small wildcat than a lap cat. Its ancestry includes the jungle cat, a wild species from Asia and the Middle East, crossed with domestic cats such as the Abyssinian. TICA recognized the breed in 1995 and gave it championship status in 2013.
Most Chausies in homes today are several generations removed from the jungle cat and fully domestic. Many are bright, playful and eager to be part of everything, which suits Atlanta households where someone is around often. Daily play, climbing space and company matter more than square footage. Coat, energy and temperament still vary from cat to cat, so judge each Chausie by how it actually behaves.
