Birmans are colorpointed, semi-longhaired cats with pure white paws, called gloves in front and laces on the hind legs, and deep blue eyes. The breed took shape in France after cats arrived from Burma around 1919; the sacred temple cat story is legend rather than documented history. Points come in seal, blue, chocolate, lilac and other colors, and kittens are born pale, with the points darkening as they age.
Many Birmans are gentle and sociable with soft voices, and they tend to stay near their people without being demanding. The silky coat has little undercoat, so it mats less than many longhaired coats, though weekly combing helps. They take about three years to mature fully. That makes them a natural match for indoor life in an Atlanta condo or bungalow, though every cat has its own personality.
