The American Curl began with Shulamith, a black longhaired stray with backward-curling ears who turned up at a home in Lakewood, California, in 1981. The curl comes from a dominant gene, and the breed reached championship status in the 1990s. Curls are medium cats, usually 5 to 10 pounds, with silky longhaired or shorthaired coats in every color and pattern.
Many Curls are people-oriented, playful and curious, and they often keep a kittenish streak into adulthood. Their coats need only light combing, and no breed-linked diseases have been documented. The ears need gentle handling because the cartilage at the base is firm. That sociable, adaptable nature suits a city of shared walls and small spaces, though every cat's personality differs.
