Calico describes a coat of white with patches of black and orange, or gray and cream in the dilute version. The pattern appears on domestic shorthairs and longhairs and on some pedigreed breeds, so there's no single calico build. Most adoptable calicos are medium-sized domestic shorthairs, usually 6 to 12 pounds, and many live 12 to 18 years with good care.
Care looks like that of any house cat: vaccines, dental attention, weight control and regular checkups. Shedding is moderate, so weekly brushing keeps fur manageable, and longhaired mixes need it more often. In Tallahassee, a calico's daily life is mostly indoors, with a rabies tag on her collar and a hurricane-season kit ready.
