Bengals are medium-sized, muscular cats, usually 8 to 15 pounds, with a short, soft coat in spotted, rosetted or marbled patterns and often a glittering sheen. The breed started in the United States in the 1960s with crosses between domestic cats and the Asian leopard cat, but Bengals today are many generations removed and fully domestic. They shed lightly and need only weekly brushing.
Personality is the bigger consideration. Bengals are intelligent, curious and athletic, and many fetch, walk on a harness or play in running water. They stay kittenish for years and can get loud or destructive when bored. In Gainesville, that means planning for daily play, climbing space and puzzle feeders, whether you rent near campus or own a house. Each Bengal differs, so some are calmer than others.
