The American Shorthair descends from European working cats that traveled to North America on ships and later guarded barns and homesteads. Today's cats are medium to large, with a broad face, full cheeks and a thick, hard-textured coat that comes in dozens of colors, silver tabby being the classic. Males are usually heavier than females, and many cats take three to four years to fill out.
Many are easygoing, quietly affectionate and happy to supervise from a nearby chair. They love hunting-style play and tend to gain weight without it. In Denver, that means keeping a cat indoors or in a secure enclosure, partly because coyotes live in the metro area's parks and open space. Many shorthaired shelter cats are random-bred domestic shorthairs with a similar look and temperament.
