The American Shorthair descends from working cats that traveled with European settlers to keep rodents off ships and out of grain stores. Early in the twentieth century, the sturdiest of them became a recognized breed, originally shown as the Domestic Shorthair. The result is a solid, muscular, medium-to-large cat with a broad face, full cheeks and a dense, hard-textured coat in dozens of colors, from the classic silver tabby to solid black.
Most American Shorthairs are easygoing and quietly affectionate, content to supervise from a nearby chair. They tend to enjoy hunting-style play and gain weight easily without it. In Santa Rosa, many shorthaired cats are random-bred domestic shorthairs with a similar look, so adopters may meet cats with the same traits under either name. Each cat's personality matters more than its label.
