Domestic Medium Hair is a coat description rather than a breed. The label covers mixed-ancestry cats whose fur falls between short and long, usually with a fuller tail, tufts between the toes and a soft undercoat, but no heavy ruff. They come in every color and pattern, from tabby and tuxedo to calico and solid black, and most are medium-sized and sturdy, weighing roughly 6 to 14 pounds.
Because their ancestry is mixed, size, personality and health vary from cat to cat, and meeting the cat is the best guide to temperament. Expect more brushing than a shorthair needs, especially when the coat thickens or sheds. In San Bernardino's dry, sunny climate, that mostly means keeping fur free of mats and giving the cat cool, shaded spots to rest through the long warm season.
