Bengals are medium-sized, muscular cats, usually 8 to 15 pounds, with a short, soft coat that's spotted, rosetted or marbled and often has a glittery sheen. The breed began in California in the 1960s with crosses between domestic cats and Asian leopard cats, but pet Bengals today are fully domestic and many generations removed from that ancestor.
Personality is the bigger part of the story. Bengals are intelligent, curious and athletic, and many stay kittenish for years. They fetch, open cabinets and love running water. That energy needs somewhere to go indoors, so plan on climbing space, puzzle feeders and daily play. Cats vary, though, and some adult Bengals are calmer than the breed's reputation suggests.
