Your guide to finding and caring for a Domestic Long Hair in Oakland
Domestic Long Hairs suit Oakland apartment life well, especially the walkable blocks around Adams Point and Uptown. They're fluffy mixed-ancestry cats, not a breed, so each one has its own personality. Most are happy with a window perch, a scratching post and a couple of play sessions a day, no yard needed. The coat is the main chore: plan on brushing a few times a week, and expect some fur on the couch.

Domestic Long Hair
Domestic Long Hair is a coat description, not a breed. The label covers mixed-ancestry cats with medium to long fur, in every color and pattern from tabby and calico to smoke and solid black. Most adults weigh 8 to 15 pounds, though long fur can make a cat look bigger than it is. Some resemble a Maine Coon or Persian without sharing that ancestry.
That variety is the appeal. A cat's size, energy and temperament depend on its own history, so spending time with a cat tells you more than the label does. What these cats share is a coat that tangles without regular brushing, plus moderate to heavy shedding. With basic care, many live 12 to 18 years, which is a long commitment in a city where plenty of people move between rentals.
Having a Domestic Long Hair in Oakland
Domestic Long Hairs share a coat type, not a pedigree, so traits vary from cat to cat. In Oakland, the things that matter most are grooming time, apartment-friendly enrichment and a plan for earthquakes or fire season, such as keeping a carrier ready.
Personality comes from each cat's genes, early socialization and life history rather than the coat. Many Domestic Long Hairs are affectionate and adaptable, which helps in busy Oakland buildings with neighbors and street noise. Some are shy at first, so give a new cat a quiet room and a few weeks to settle in.
Plan on two short play sessions a day with wand toys, balls or puzzle feeders, adjusted for the cat's age. In an Oakland apartment, a tall cat tree and a window perch make up for having no yard. Daily play also keeps weight in check, which helps a long-haired cat groom itself.
Mixed ancestry means no breed-specific inherited conditions, but long coats can mat and cause hairballs, especially in older or overweight cats. Dental disease, obesity and kidney disease are common in cats generally, so yearly vet checkups matter. Keeping a cat indoors also avoids traffic and fights with other animals.
Domestic Long Hairs do well in an Oakland one-bedroom or a Rockridge bungalow as long as there are litter boxes, scratching posts, hiding spots and vertical space. A steady grooming routine matters more than square footage. A cool spot to rest helps on the warmer September days.

Now that you know more, let’s find you a new best friend. These rescues and shelters below currently have Domestic Long Hairs available.
Oakland has both city-run and nonprofit shelters and rescues that care for cats of every coat, age and personality. Here are the rescues & shelters in the Oakland area where you can find Domestic Long Hairs and other cats available for adoption.
Yes, most Domestic Long Hairs do well in apartments when they have litter boxes, scratching posts, perches and daily play. Look for a unit with a sunny window, and keep screens secure on upper floors. Before applying, read the lease's pet clause, since any pet deposit counts toward California's security-deposit cap.
Yes. Oakland doesn't require a license for cats and has no known breed rules for them, and a Domestic Long Hair is a coat type rather than a restricted breed. Cats adopted through shelters and rescues are spayed or neutered, and a microchip registered with your current contact details is a smart step. Renters should check the lease first.
Yes, Oakland's mild climate is easy on a long-coated cat. Summer highs average about 72°F, winter nights rarely reach freezing, and indoor cats stay comfortable most of the year. The main caution is September and October, when heat waves can push temperatures near 100°F, so provide shade, water and a cool resting spot.
Plan on brushing two to four times a week, and daily when shedding picks up. Oakland's mild, damp winters don't change the coat much, but mats form quickly if brushing lapses. Most owners groom at home, and the roughly $500 to $1,250 a year in other costs already covers grooming, litter and flea prevention.
Yes, as long as the cat is in a carrier. AC Transit requires pets to ride in a container small enough to fit on your lap, and BART requires a secure, enclosed carrier, including at its underground downtown stations. Capitol Corridor trains take pets up to 20 pounds including the carrier, so a larger cat may not qualify.
You can usually tell a kitten will have long hair by about three to four weeks old, when its fur looks noticeably fluffier than its littermates'. Look for longer tufts on the ears, between the toes and on the tail, plus a softer, fuller coat overall. The full adult coat, ruff and tail plume can take one to two years to develop.
Yes, long hair is a recessive trait in cats. A kitten needs two copies of a long-hair variant, usually in the FGF5 gene, one from each parent, to grow a long coat. Two shorthaired parents can produce longhaired kittens if both carry the variant, while a longhair bred to a cat with two short-hair copies produces only shorthaired kittens.
Domestic Long Hair cats commonly live about 12 to 18 years, and many indoor cats reach their late teens or beyond. Mixed-breed cats have broad genetic diversity, and UK veterinary research found non-pedigree cats lived longer than purebreds on average. Indoor living, a healthy weight, dental care and regular checkups make the biggest difference.
