The Chausie descends from crosses between the jungle cat, a wild species of Asia and the Middle East, and domestic cats such as the Abyssinian. TICA accepted the breed for registration in 1995 and gave it championship status in 2013. Adults typically weigh 8 to 16 pounds, with a lean build, large ears set high on the head and a short coat in black, black ticked tabby or grizzled tabby.
Cats several generations removed from the jungle cat are fully domestic, and many are playful, social and very active. Early-generation hybrids can be more demanding, and some places restrict them, so a cat's generation matters. In LA, the short coat is easy to manage in warm months, but the energy isn't: expect daily play and plan for company.
