Bengals came out of California in the 1960s, when crosses between domestic cats and the Asian leopard cat started the breed. Today's pet Bengals are many generations removed from that ancestor and are fully domestic. The coat is short, soft and close-lying, spotted, rosetted or marbled, and often has a glitter at the hair tips. Most weigh 8 to 15 pounds, with males usually larger.
In Fresno, what matters most is how a Bengal spends its day. They're smart, athletic and curious, and many fetch, walk on a harness or open cupboards. Expect a vocal, busy cat that wants a job, so climbing space, puzzle feeders and daily play are part of the deal. Shedding is low to moderate and weekly brushing is plenty, though Bengals aren't hypoallergenic.
