An Extra-Toes Cat isn't a breed. It's any cat born with polydactyly, a harmless genetic variation that adds toes to one or more paws, often giving a front paw a mitten-like look. The trait is dominant, so it turns up in domestic shorthairs and longhairs of every color and pattern. The nickname "Hemingway cat" comes from the writer's six-toed cats in Key West.
Because the toes say nothing about personality, these cats range from bold and chatty to shy and slow to warm up. Most weigh 6 to 15 pounds and live 12 to 18 years, which in Phoenix means many hot summers spent indoors. The main care difference is nail trimming, since extra claws can curl into the paw pads. Shedding is moderate and depends on the coat.
