The Balinese is essentially a longhaired Siamese, developed in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s and named for the graceful movement of Balinese dancers rather than any link to Indonesia. It has the Siamese colorpoint pattern and blue eyes, a slender body, and a silky single coat that ends in a plumed tail. A modern wedge-headed type and a sturdier traditional type both exist.
Many Balinese are social, playful and talkative, though usually quieter than a Siamese. In Phoenix, where cats are best kept indoors, that energy needs an outlet: climbing, wand toys, puzzle feeders and a person nearby. With no dense undercoat, grooming is simple. Personalities still vary from cat to cat, so an adult's own habits tell you more than the breed label.
