An extra-toes cat isn't a breed. It's any cat born with polydactyly, a harmless genetic variation that adds toes to one or more paws, often giving a front paw a mitten-like look. Most are domestic shorthairs or longhairs, so coats, sizes and personalities vary widely. Weights typically run from about 6 to 15 pounds, and lifespans from 12 to 18 years.
The "Hemingway" nickname comes from the writer Ernest Hemingway, who was given a six-toed cat. That variety is part of the appeal: you might meet a lap-seeking senior, a playful young adult or a shy kitten who needs time to settle. Shedding is moderate, and the main care difference is trimming the extra claws so they don't curl into the paw pads.
